Need-based Aid
If your family may have difficulty paying for tuition, financial aid is a good resource, and can be given in a variety of ways.
- Grants, or gifts, are given with no obligation to be repaid.
- Education Loans must be repaid, but give students a chance to study now and repay when they have graduated and have a job.
- Work-study programs allow students to work part-time during the school year to pay off part of their tuition.
Many individual colleges offer financial aid, as well as the U.S. Department of Education through its Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).This organization can be reached on the internet at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa or over the phone at 1-800-4-FED-AID.
Merit-based Aid
Merit-based scholarships, which do not have to be repaid, are awarded for significant achievement in academics, athletics, etc. State sponsored scholarships for both merit and need based aid can be found at the College Foundation of North Carolina’s website https://www.cfnc.org or over the phone at 1-866-866-CFNC.
